Cabo Pulmo is influenced by the calm waters of the Sea of Cortez and the gently-sloping beaches are protected by the area's living coral reefs, so swimming is great. The eight fingers of Cabo Pulmo's living coral reef's begin at shoreline, arching out at a 45 degree angle from the beach, with each reef finger successively deeper than the last. The reef system protects the shoreline from the type of waves and large surf associated with the active waters of the Pacific Ocean at Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, where many beaches are unsafe for swimming.
Rip tides and undertows are uncommon in Cabo Pulmo and even small children can play in the gently lapping waves. There are no swimming pools in Cabo Pulmo because we don't need them! We have the marvelous Sea of Cortez.
