Beach Hikes around Cabo Pulmo
The best beach hike you find anywhere is right here at Cabo Pulmo. The hike to the south from Cabo Pulmo village takes you through a series of small coves, separated by rocky points underneath sandstone cliffs. The hike is difficult at high tide, so wait until you see the first reef poking up from the water. Then you know that the tide is low enough to walk all the way to the south end of the bay. There are two points you usually need to scramble over. Follow where others have gone for the easiest way over. It's about three miles one-way to Corral Los Frailes, the inside cove just north of Los Frailes Point.
When you are at the south end of the bay, you can also walk out to Mermaid Beach (our name for it) which is located toward the eastern point of land. The hike is about another mile via a hillside trail. There are two wonderful coves to snorkel. The area is called a variety of names; Iguana Beach, Dinosaur Egg Beach, Mermaid Lagoon but our favorite name is Mermaid Beach because there is a rock structure that looks just like a mermaid when viewed from the proper angle.. We recommend you wear athletic shoes, billed cap and sun screen. Take a water bottle if you plan to be gone long.
You can also drive to Corral Los Frailes and pick up your hikers if they only wish to hike one way. Drive three miles south and take the left-hand dirt road just before the big point of Los Frailes. The road will take you down a rutted hill, past a rancho and to the beach.
We now have 2 great mountain hikes. Trails were blazed by some local American mountain bikers and they are great for hiking. The mountain hike goes all the way to the top of the tallest mountain behind Cabo Pulmo. The views are incredible and in winter months when humpback whales are around, you can see them breaching off shore. To get to the mountain hike, walk the new road that's been built part way up the mountain. At the end of the road, climb the ridge to the top. There's really no "trail" but you can see where others have proceeded you. This hike is not for the out-of-shape or the faint-of-heart as parts of the upper reaches are steep. The second hike is one that circles the tall mountain. Ask a local for directions. From VILLA & CASA DEL MAR and EL NIDO walk due west along the beach access road and continue walking until you are opposite the two large water tanks on the hill. It's sometimes difficult to see where the trail starts, but it will head north about a quarter mile past the water tanks and turn north then circle the mountain and put you back onto the road you drove in on.
